Mrs. Nelson, our Elementary Principal, speaks out about the dedication to kids and impact Oklahoma educators make, the many hats rural educators wear, and how years of cuts to education continue to hurt our most precious resource, our children.

“Years of deep cuts to public education in Oklahoma have hurt our children, our state’s most valuable resource. Someday, our children will be adult leaders making decisions for us. If we don’t invest in giving them a quality education now, what will the future of our state look like? I earned my degrees in Elementary Education and Spanish from Southwestern. For the last 10 years, I’ve thrived as an elementary principal in a rural, farming town where public schools are the heartbeat of community life. My husband is the district superintendent, and together our teachers and administrators are passionate about our students. We take our jobs seriously. As is typical in smaller districts, our educators wear many hats to ensure our families are well-served. Each day, my husband rises before dawn to drive a bus route over two hours transporting kids to and from school. He's also in charge of school maintenance, and is constantly working to reduce operational costs. Just recently, we partnered with our electric company to purchase new energy-efficient light bulbs in our schools, eliminating thousands of dollars from our electric bills. Our educators work tirelessly year-round to coach, counsel, referee, transport, test, tutor, feed, house, and care for our students. This is our job and responsibility, to teach our children well and to let them know they are safe and loved. Hopefully, at some point, our state will do its job to adequately fund education so effective teaching and learning can occur in our schools. Will this become a reality for children in Oklahoma? Time will tell.” ~Kas Nelson Vici Elementary School Vici, OK
